More Than Placements: The Human Side of Real Estate Recruitment in Dubai

By Shelley Greer, Executive Consultant

In Dubai’s fast-moving property market, the right conversation can change everything — from a cold lead to a committed agent. This dives into the memorable talks, awkward truths, and surprising moments that reveal who will thrive in a brokerage: the questions that uncover motivation, the answers that signal cultural fit, and the small details that predict long-term success.

When people ask me what I do, I usually say,

“I recruit for real estate firms in Dubai.”

It sounds straightforward, almost glamorous.

But what that sentence doesn’t show is the conversations, the pressure, the doubt, the ambition, the risk and the moments that stay with you long after the deal is done.

Because recruitment, especially in Dubai’s real estate market, is never just about sending CVs.

It’s about people taking chances.

The Pace, The Pressure, The Potential

Dubai's real estate market moves fast—really fast.

You’re dealing with ambitious candidates, growing firms, big personalities and even bigger targets. Decisions can happen quickly, but they can also fall apart just as quickly.

I’ve had weeks where everything aligns perfectly. Offers signed. Start dates confirmed. Everyone excited.

And I’ve had weeks where placements collapse at the final stage, candidates get cold feet, or businesses suddenly change direction.

That’s the reality of it!

It’s not always smooth. It’s not always predictable.

But that’s also what I love about it.

No two days are ever the same. Each call is different, and behind every one is a person with a unique story.

The Candidate I’ll Never Forget

A few years ago, I was working with a candidate who had strong potential but lacked confidence in himself.

He was good—really good—but he was comfortable where he was: safe, steady.

An opportunity came up for a Team Leader position. It was a step up, more responsibility, more pressure, more visibility.

He hesitated...

We had several honest conversations where I pushed him—reminding him he was capable of more and explaining that stepping into discomfort is often what creates real growth.

Eventually, he took the leap.

I placed him into that role.

Over the years, I watched from a distance as his career progressed dramatically. Bigger teams. Bigger achievements. More recognition within the industry.

Then one evening, completely out of the blue, my phone rang.

He had just won an award at a ceremony.

And he called to say thank you.

Not because he needed another role.
Not because he wanted something.

But because he remembered being pushed to step into something bigger than he thought he could handle.

That moment meant more to me than any invoice ever could.

Why I Still Love Recruitment?

Recruitment can be tough.

The work involves lengthy processes, frequent delays, complex negotiations, persistent follow-ups, and the emotional challenge of managing expectations for both clients and candidates.

But then there are moments like that phone call.

Or the message six months later saying,

“I’ve just hit my best month ever.”

Or the client telling you,

“That hire changed our team.”

You speak to so many people in this industry, ambitious individuals who have moved countries, taken risks, and backed themselves. Being part of that journey, even in a small way, is something I don’t take lightly.

More Than Just Filling Roles

Recruitment in Dubai’s real estate market, for me, is never just a transaction.

It’s about spotting potential.
It’s about honest conversations.
It’s about sometimes pushing someone when they need it.
And sometimes being the calm voice when they’re about to give up.

It’s not always easy.

When you genuinely care about the people you work with, your work becomes more than just a job.

Every so often, you’re reminded that what you do really matters.

That’s why I still love it.
